tak menentukan tinggi rendah keinginan yang dipunya
tekun pintar malas bodoh mereka

mimpi ada dalam satu garis
pada goresan pertama, berupa rasa ingin memiliki
dan lanjut terusan garis
berisi ketakutan, kesabaran, kewaspadaan dan strategi

pada akhirnya..
apakah garis itu akan naik, turun, atau akan lurus
akibatnya..
muncul saat memutuskan berhenti atau terus..

"mimpi itu fiksi atau mimpi jadi nyata"
adalah tertanam dalam diri mereka
termasuk dalam diriku...
ku wujudkan mimpi dengan segenap kemampuanku...

sekarang ku tanya apa mimpi mereka
dan apa yang saat ini mereka lakukan

What are Beats?

What are Beats?
This is the most important term to understand in Hip Hop construction, cause if you don't know it, you'll never understand what people are talking about. The Beat is basically, the whole song minus the vocals. It usually includes the following:

1. MIDI Drum patterns or audio drum loops, which comprise the complete drum tracks
2. A Bassline (MIDI sequence typically)
3. Supporting Orchestration (could be synth pads, string sections, horns)
4. Dubs and snips (samples that accent and give character)
The Beat can be long or short. In its shortest form it is 8 bars. If short, it is usually looped over and over again, for as long as the vocalist wants. If long, it may be comprised of different parts for the verse and chorus and may add an introduction, a break, and an ending. Often, the HH song follows classic pop form of Intro (8 bars). Verse (8-16 bars) Chorus (8 bars) Verse (8-16 bars) Chorus (8 bars) Break (2-8 bars) Verse or Chorus (8-16 bars) then ends in a fade out. This structure, called the arrangement, of course, is not written in stone. It can be modified to suit the piece at hand.
What do the vocal tracks consist of in a Hip Hop song?
1. Main vocal: The main vocalist performs the rap
2. Second Vocal: Some songs may have a guest vocal or second vocal that takes a verse
3. Background Vocals: Are often created to give a sense that a whole group is participating
4. Overdubbed vocals: During the chorus and at other parts that the artist wishes to emphasize, the main vocal may be doubled, tripled or even quadrupled
We'll get to vocals in a later article.
Elements of a Hip Hop Beat
Lets dissect a basic hip hop beat and talk about the 4 basic elements I described above.
1. MIDI Drum patterns or audio drum loops
This is the "core" of the song so you should take great care with what you are laying down here. There are two basic methods here and you may use either or both in the same song.
a) Audio Loops This is the simplest way to proceed. Most sequencers come with a selection of drum loops and these can be used, edited, re-grooved and effected. Audio can be tweaked to give you the sound you want. Loops can be time stretched and compressed. You can add effects with plugins. Perhaps the more creative tweaks one can do is in an audio editor like Recycle or Sound Forge. Here you can destructively (meaning you are actually altering the sound file) modify parts, even single hits, within the audio loop.
b) MIDI drum patterns While this method is slightly more complicated, if usually gives more exacting and easy-to alter results. Here the keyboard, control pad surface or electronic drum kit triggers samples for each drum. The samples may reside in a software sampler, synth, hardware MPC type sampler or even as an instrument in some applications. In all cases the drums are a pattern of MIDI notes that correspond to sampled hits. In your sequencer this may be on a grid, dedicated drum pattern editor or piano roll editor.
You can use loops or MIDI or both. It's common in Hip Hop, as well as other forms of electronica, to have more than one drum loop playing at once. As long as they work together and enhance the groove, its fine. Hip Hop artists have been very creative with drum tracks and our ears are accustomed to great variance with unusual timing offsets. Drums in hip hop are allowed to go places sonically that other genres will not.
2. A Bassline
You can find basslines in audio form already made out for you, but it is often better to use MIDI, given you have some decent bass samples, a good soft synth for bass or a hardware synth with decent analog emulations. Why use MIDI? Bass audio loops do not transpose easily and may leave warbly audio artifacts when you do. An analog or digital synthesizer, however, can create a fresh low waveform in real time. Good bass sounds for hip hop come from a variety of synthesizers. Old analog Mono synths and their software and hardware emulations are the first place to go. Basslines are rarely complex in typical hip hop, but are thick and low and usually have a sub-bass element, brought out by filtering and overcompression. Many, though not all, classic HH basses rely on a low pass filter with resonance, which is the most standard filter found in analog synthesis. This kind of filter removes the high frequencies and fattens the low end. That gives you a muffy, puffed up bottom yet allows the vocals to pass right over in the mix, keeping them clear and distinct. Some HH basses emphasize the high frequencies rather than the low, leaving the kick drum to carry the low end entirely. And of course a real bass can be used as well. Keep it simple, repeatable.

3. Supporting Orchestration
While the term "orchestration" may sound complex, it is really a simple concept. To orchestrate is to select instruments that "go together". Hip Hop and rap began with orchestration that was sparse and often minimalist. Instruments are chosen often more for their impact on the groove than for their melodic capabilities. How do you know what instruments to select? You do it by trial and error basically. But I find it helpful to use a "metaphor" of other ensembles when coming up with my own orchestrations. For instance, using an RnB metaphor, you might add a smooth electric piano, funked up jazz guitar strums, some nasty horn hits, congas, maybe a vibraphone. You visualize the old RnB band in your mind and use that vision as the metaphor for deciding your orchestration. A "symphonic" metaphor may have you bring in heavy string sections, gongs, timpani, orchestral percussion, glockenspiels. A "downtown session" metaphor might include studio brass, clean guitars, standup bass. A "club" metaphor might have a drunken crowd and musicians that play sloppily. Ask yourself: Who is in this band? What are they thinking? Where are they playing? In a club, on the street, India, or in your homies basement?
4. Dubs and snips
Hip hop and rap arose when sampling took off around 1986. With sampling, there was finally an easy way rip audio material off of vinyl (and CDs), which is exactly what the early artists did. Drum beats, record scratches and surface noise, string, brass and full orchestra hits, sax riffs, guitar chords, electric piano chords were sampled as "one shots", a term popularized by Akai, were laid out on the keyboard and put right in the midi pattern with the kick, snare, hats and other drum hits. Today you can buy royalty free sample sets that give you all the dubs and snips you want, though people are still going to capture snips from the records of the past to get that subliminal recognition. Today's audio editing and multi channel samplers allow separate channels and separate effects for dubs and snips. Since audio was added to our sequencers we can now drag samples straight to an audio track and give each its own custom treatment with plugins. This has made the often hard work of editing samples to a rather easy process. Dubs and snips of audio dramatically add character, time and space to the composition, just like flipping through a collection of old photographs. Its a quick abstract reference to another time and place, that ideally fits with your metaphor.

How to Survive a Freestyle Rap Battle

First things first; battling is the basis for all rap music. The battle is the truest essence of rap and where rap music started. The object of a rap battle is to come up with insulting rap lyrics on the spot (not pre-written or pre-meditated) and rap them towards an opponent. The rapper with the best delivery, lyrics, and crowd response usually wins. This manual will outline the basic steps of how to begin battling, and some tips that will make you better.
Steps

1. Do your homework, watch videos online of battles (smack DVD and jumpoff.tv are good ones), or try to go to rap battles near your hometown. There is a scene in the movie 8 mile that is a good representation of what a freestyle rap battle is really like.
2. Try and get your ears on some freestyle raps done by accomplished artists who are well known for their rap battles. You can learn a lot from rappers like Eminem, JIN, D-Graz, Big L, Ill Bill, Eyedea, Adeem, Vinnie Paz, Pacewon and any other artist known for battling. Good battles to look up include the Blaze Battles from HBO, Scribble Jam, among others. YouTube.com is an easy way to find these
3. Pay careful attention to the techniques those artists use to battle, and try to mirror them which will help you enhance your own techniques.
4. Start writing. Write down anything that comes to mind and try to rhyme it. Write down sets of rhymes and then choose the best rhymes to go with your subject of rap.Consider getting a rhyming dictionary. The ability to write an effective battle rhyme will aid you when it comes to the battle.
5. Practice freestyling (rapping without pre-written lyrics on the spot or impromptu) -- anytime, anywhere, as much as you can. Even if you run out of things to freestyle about, just keep going, the longer you force yourself to rap without giving up the stronger you'll become mentally. It's like a mental workout.
6. Once you get freestyling down, try freestyling battle rhymes. Take a picture of someone, look at your dog do what ever you can to picture an opponent you are about to rap against and try and come up with clever ways to insult the opponent with rap lyrics.
7. Start freestyle battling. The best way to start battling is to find opponents that are just for fun and don't care if you insult them or mess up for that matter. Constantly battle like that with people, especially if you can find a friend who is actually good at battling so they can teach how to improve what you lack. Again, continue to practice this until other friends you know (especially those into hip-hop music) think you're pretty good. House parties, and rap concerts are also good places to practice your battle rap techniques before actually entering a staged freestyle rap battle.
8. Don't worry if you lose your first few real battles, the point is to constantly practice freestyling and writing. As with anything, the longer you do it the better you'll become. Continue practicing until you've got it down. There are many techniques to battling, but these are just the basics.

Tips

* When in a rap battle, you want to make sure that your verse includes three major things.

o Metaphors - Making comparisons with your opponent to something that insults them.
o Disses - (a diss is an insult)You want to diss your opponent on broad topics like: how they dress, speak, spit, look, walk, talk, act, or their personality; or personally: the way they live, their past, their lifestyle, or any other weaknesses about them.
o Humor - Make the crowd and judges and even your opponent laugh. Sometimes that will win the battle for you.
* Battle raps are made up of two parts; a set up and a punch line. The set up is a line that is an opener or rhyme line that your punch-line (where the insult is) will follow. A Punch-Line is basically a line that incorporates a Metaphor, Dis, and/or anything else to enhance the flow directed at your opponent.

o Example: In Nas' song called Ether (a famous rap battle song directed towards Jay-Z) he says "Put it together (the set up), I rock hoes ya'll Roc-Fellas" (the punch line is an insult using the name of Jay-Z's rap label and insinuating that Jay-Z and his camp prefer men over women).
* If someone beats you in a battle and it gets to you, practice more until you think you're really ready. Then challenge them again: if you win, you will earn a lot of respect back. It's a great feeling, and chicks or dudes will dig your system and flair.
* The more you write the better your freestyle will become.
* When you think you lost it, don't worry - just relax. The worst thing to do is freak out. Just relax and keep going. There is always value in overcoming a mess up.
* While your opponent is rapping, you should be figuring out what you are going to say in your next verse. But be careful not to tune your opponent out, because sometimes the insults they say to you can be flipped (re-directed as an insult towards the person who said it) and used to your advantage.
* Ordering of the spit is also important to some degree. While you are trying to rebut someone dissing you when you reply back, but when you spit first, you want to take that away. You can do that by self-deprecation. Anyone who can self-criticize can be very unexpected for the opponent trying to find flaws.
* Take 8 Mile's Final Battle for example, since B-Rabbit was put to spit first, he insulted himself and basically said a big 'so what?'. "Yes, I'm white, I'm a bum, I live in a trailer, my mum's a drug addict...", thus basically taking every possible insult directed at him away from Papa Doc before Papa has anything to fight back. Then B-Rabbit dissed Papa Doc for being a private-schooler, then he closed out his turn by saying this battle is pointless, "Here, tell people something they don't know about me".
* Use humor in your rhymes, especially if your opponent is dead serious, that will make them mess up and possibly crack up. If you can get your opponent to agree with you during your battle verse, you are making great strides towards a win.
* Just stay focused and be confident in what your saying. Remember delivery is everything.
* There are two types of battles, free style and thought out, now.A battle may go longer than you thought so just remember to practice and bring out words out of the blue.Try to write the lyrics that are thought out when you're angry or hyper, energy puts words on paper.
* Don't say anything that is unrelated to the person, and don't say your going to kill them or that you sell drugs if you don't.
* Even if the opponent is using pre writtens - say he is, then there will always be that uncertainty in the crowd
* Don't look down, when you look down you show that you are getting beat, stay lookin into his eyes, but not like you are hard and your gonna hit him, cause chances are he will hit you.
* You should prefer facts and actualities in your freestyle rap battle, they will reduce your oponents self-confidence.

Warnings

* If you lose many rap battles and your friends pick it up with you, don't listen to them. Because you can get yourself real down and maybe do some crazy stuff. Just relax, take a break and just listen to your heart (sometimes you just have to stop looking and searching, and things will come by themselves).
